Software & Hardware Policy

Intro

In this document we, 'Bergstein Digital BV' from now on refered to as 'Bergstein', will explain what what Software and Hardware policies apply to the Printer and its related components as purchased and used by you, the 'purchaser and/or user' from now on refered to as 'Customer'.

When purchasing a Bergstein Printer, a pre-configured IPC (Industrial Personal Computer), will be builtin/delivered. For Gen3 printer this means an OnLogic HX511 with Windows 11 Pro installed and tailored to the Printers functionality.

To ensure continued proper functioning of the printer we setout a policy regarding:

HMI

Hardware

The HMI IPC is delivered with two ethernet (RJ45) ports.

The first ethernet port is used for LAN (P1), which serves to connect the HMI application with all internal components. Its network interface should always be:

Under no circumstances can this be altered!

The second ethernet port is used for WAN (P2), which allows the PC to communicate to an external network. Upon delivery its configured for DHCP, but you are free to change its settings.

Changing the settings will require administrative access. For more info see the OS chapter.

Further more, this PC is equiped with an RS485 connection through an USB-to-Serial adapter (Advantech ADAM module). The driver for this adapter is installed during manufacturing of the printer. The drivers for this adapter can be downloaded and installed from the manufactures website: https://www.advantech.com/en/support/details/driver?id=1-13U9QTV .

Therefore its recommended NOT to disconnect or alter any of the USB connections, settings & drivers.

Software

On the HMI PC we have a DIGI HMI application (also called DigiHMI or DIGI Manager). This app will allow for the user to interact with the printer.

This DigiHMI application is situated in c:/DigiHMI/Bergstein.exe and requires full read/write access to:

As mentioned, the DigiHMI exposes an API to allow external commands to be issued to the printer. This API is an gRPC API with JSON REST transcoding and functions over the HTTP2 protocol. The default port is 6001.

When allowing for external access, please make sure you allow HTTP2, and ICMPv4 for ping commands, on that 6001 port. It is possible, albeit not recommended, to adjust the default port in the c:/DigiHMI/appsettings.json config file, but this also requires the firewall to be updated to allow external applications to communicate with the DigiHMI.

The continued proper functioning of the printer relies on the proper care and use of the HMI app. Any intrinsic alteration of the HMI app voids warranty and releases Bergstein as responsible party.

OS

The installed OS (Operating System) is Windows 11 Pro. The service pack version will always be the latest (at the time of manufacturing the machine).

Two local user accounts are installed on the PC:

The operator user is configured to automatically login during system startup and usage of the PC.

In case of the HMI PC, an inbound firewall rule has been configured to allow external apps (i.e. the DIGI Print Manager) to connect to the HMI application (via an API). This firewall rule is called Bergstein DIGI Manager and allows ports (6000..6001) for the DigiHMI application.

The password of the administrator account can be freely requested at the earliest from the FAT (Factory-Acceptance-Test) phase. Storage and usage of this password, once distributed to the customer, remains the full responsibility of said customer.

The continued proper functioning of the printer relies on the proper care and use of the OS. Therefore its the customers responsibility and duty to maintain, backup, update and safeguard the state of the OS.

The Print Manager software suite is an additional software package to automate and delegate your print processes from/to one or more Bergstein printers.

Hardware

To for a complete and indepth information about the Print Manager software you can use the following PrintManagerTechnicalGuide.

On the Print Manager PC/server, you will probably run the Print Manager software suite as container instances in Docker. If this PC is issued with Windows (Server or 11), it will use WSL (Windows-Subsystem-Linux) to run those containers. Please make sure hardware virtualization is enabled in the BIOS/UEFI settings. For more information, please refer to the Installation Guide of the Print Manager.

Additionally, its known for Windows updates to sometimes break the running WSL instance, making the Print manager unusable until WSL has been recovered. Please act with caution when applying updates and make sure to have regular (full system) backups to prevent downtime or data loss.

Furthermore, the Print Manager stores data in the form of settings, files and images. Please make sure you reserve enough storage capacity for the container volumes. If the storage capacity is (about to be) hit, you might encounter (severe) system instability!

Programs which interact and/or interface with the Print Manager software and/or underlying hardware (PC), fall squarely out of the responsibility and support of Bergstein.

Please make sure to keep Windows up-to-date, secure and make regular (full system) backups!

Any intrinsic alteration to the Windows configuration might (severly) impact the functioning of the printer. Keep the above instruction in mind when doing any changes to the system.

In no instance is Bergstein Digital responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and lifecycle management of the Windows OS.

Bergstein retains the rights to change, alter and update this policy in the future.
